Have you ever tried fried avocado? I’ve had it twice this week, and I used frozen avocado this time instead of fresh, which made for some great discussions on Facebook and Instagram.
It’s SO easy to make – and I’ve even ordered it at restaurants before too!
It makes a great “keto swap” as a replacement for home fries (aka breakfast potatoes):
Or a delicious side dish to practically any meal!
I made that ^ as a side dish in this low carb food diary from 2016 to go with hamburgers, veggie skewers & deviled eggs – a cookout with friends:
Delicious combo!
The picture above (the second one) was fresh avocado. The first picture though, was frozen avocado. I found this Dole Sunshine brand in the frozen foods aisle 🛒 at several grocery stores:
💚 3 carbs, 2 fiber = 1 net carb for 1/4 cup (30 grams)
What a great find! You can portion out only what you want for salads or cooking, and it’s always fresh – and the perfect ripeness every single time! 👌
It’s SO convenient for salads, or to fry up super fast (straight from the freezer to skillet) as an easy keto side to any meal.
I love it as a breakfast or brunch side, like with this spinach & bacon omelet I had the other day:
That’s Daisy sour cream on the side. I love sour cream with a farm scramble or omelet!
I add half a tbsp of butter to a nonstick skillet, turn it on medium heat, toss in the avocado (still frozen) and brown it up crisp real quick. 🧈 🍳 🥑
Mmmmmm 😍
If you’re using fresh avocado, it helps if it’s firm. I stick mine in the refrigerator for awhile before I’m going to cook, and that helps make it handle better too.
🔪 Cut it carefully into cubes or slices with a sharp knife, salt it 🧂 and fry it in a non stick skillet over medium heat until browned nice & crisp on the outside. 🍳
I use about half a tbsp of butter or less for a smaller serving. I used a full tbsp of butter in this big pan of fresh avocado – but it soaks it up as it crisps the outside:
This avocado kitchen utensil thingy comes in really handy too – if you’re less experienced with avocado, like me (lol). I got it on Amazon, this one: OXO Good Grips 3-in-1 Avocado Slicer
You really can’t screw this up, but IF YOU DO 🙂 …
If you accidentally mash your avocado and make a mess 🥑👀 (lol) – just patty them out & fry them like *potato cakes. 😉👍 You can sprinkle a little mozzarella or parmesan on one or both sides of the “avo-mash” to make it hold together better and crisp up more too.
Now I have to try that next! It sounds delicious actually. 😋
* If you’re not southern, “potato cakes” are sort of like hash browns. But not. More like mashed potatoes formed and fried into something like silver dollar pancakes. 🤔
The frozen avocado is definitely easier to work with.
I weigh my portion (I had 2 servings, 60 grams) while the half tbsp of butter is melting in the non-stick skillet over medium heat – then toss it straight into the pan still frozen.
It comes out perfect every time!
Get Creative With It!
I love avocado just salted and fried in a bit of real butter. Other people mentioned adding garlic powder too, which does sound great!
A lot of add-ins would really dress up a pan of fried avocado, or the “avocado cakes” idea I mentioned above. The first thing that came to my mind was diced onion & chopped bacon. 🧅🥓 Yum!
I mentioned I’ve used the frozen avocado twice this week…
On Friday I pulled out some pre-made ham cups, and tossed those into the skillet about halfway through frying the frozen avocado. That made for an absolutely delicious meal – in a few short minutes!
Ham, eggs & fried avocado. 🍳🥑🥰
Ham Cups are a great idea for your weekly meal prep, to have grab & go breakfast foods on hand.
You can google “keto ham cups” – they’re very easy to make in a muffin pan!
Mine were pre-made, and the omelet was as well. They were two of the breakfast items I added to my Evolve order last week. That’s the low carb meal delivery service I’ve been using.

I had their Old Fashioned Chicken Salad for lunch & dinner today. Yes, both. 🙂 It’s SO good! I’ve been really impressed with them. I order a la carte (straight off the website menu) so I can mix & match breakfasts, grab & go meals, plus lunches & dinners.
The omelet was really good. I added half a serving of shredded cheddar to each side, and fried it in the skillet to get the cheese crispy on the outside. 🥰 I love fried cheese!
I was pretty hungry Friday, so adding the avocado to the ham cups as one big brunch plate was perfect!👌
I mentioned I’ve ordered fried avocado at restaurants too.
This was at Chili’s Grill & Bar a few years ago. I noticed they had “fried avocado” on one of their specialty sandwiches at the time, so I asked for it as my second side with the grilled salmon & steamed broccoli.
That totally blew my mind! I’d been making fried avocado at home for years, but I’d never seen it on a restaurant menu before. 🙂
I’ve even requested fried avocado at Mexican restaurants twice now, and it was FABULOUS both times.
I can’t seem to find the original picture of that plate ANYwhere, but here is a video from a local Mexican restaurant where I ordered it last.
Here’s how I ordered it:
“Can I have steak, shrimp & chicken with mushrooms & avocado, all grilled together please? No sauce or rice, just that.”
I call it Ketojitas – a sizzling fajita platter, keto style! 🔥
My server had never heard of fried avocado, but agreed it looked fabulous. 😉 I was impressed they didn’t overcharge me for the special order meal. It was about the same as a mixed fajita entree. Nice!
Have you ever tried fried avocado? 🥑
Simply cube or slice, salt it, then fry hot & fast in butter or bacon drippings 🍳 for a delicious low carb side or salad topper.
I have vegetarian friends that LOVE that hot/fried avocado in place of grilled chicken when we’re making salads! I’ve also served it in place of meat over riced broccoli & cauliflower. 🥦
For your vegan or vegetarian friends, you can brown the avocado in olive oil or avocado oil. Coconut oil works too, it just might add a hint of coconut flavor.;)
I never liked avocado until I tried it FRIED!
So if you don’t like avocado 😝 … trust me, try it this way. You just may love it! 💯
I love avocado ALL ways now – raw/fresh, fried, guacamole, you name it!
My daughter prefers whole, perfectly ripe UNcooked avocado. 🙂
If she has eggs and avocado, she’s good to go!
Scrambled eggs and an avocado, or 2 boiled eggs & 1 avocado.
Simple, easy, filling. 🙂
If you haven’t ever tried fried avocado, or used the frozen avocado before, what do you think of these ideas? Is it something you might try?
If you’ve already tried it, I’d love to hear your thoughts.
Did you love it or hate it?
If you have any creative ideas or add-ins, or different ways YOU like to enjoy avocado, drop a comment. I’m always looking for new ways to enjoy it!

I love avocado any way you fix it, except when you add heat to it (like jalapeno in a guacamole). I bought the Oxo Good Grips 3-in-1 Avocado Slicer about a week ago, and it does great for the slicing and pitting, but I tend to buy the smaller avocados like they sell at Trader Joe’s, and it doesn’t slice the smaller ones. You need to have one slightly bigger than the size of the slicer for it to work. But I can’t wait to try fried avocado since I like it every other way. My favorite way so far is avocado toast – the toast being Outer Aisle Cauliflower Thins as the “toast”. You never mention them in your blog so I don’t know if you’ve tried them but I eat them almost every day, especially Everything But The Bagel flavored. I usually heat them on my flat griddle, then schmear on the mashed avocado, then go from there. YUM!

I have tried the Outer Aisle Gourmet thins and crusts. Those are SO good. π I met the owners a couple of years ago – great people, with a really great product. I love the clean ingredients.
If you order online my discount code is LOWCARBTRAVELER at Outer Aisle Gourmet. I’ll have to try your avocado toast idea too, that sounds delicious – simple and super healthy!
I just got an order and love those for making creative pizzas. Last time I made a breakfast pizza with bacon, spinach and fried eggs. This time I’m thinking pulled pork and sugar free bbq sauce with mozzarella. Yum! I love the OAG Thins too for a quick sandwich, or with a burger.
Let me know what you think of the fried avocado! π
