In my very last post I was talking about staying on track at restaurants, and then I had a major SHOCK over my own restaurant meal last night! 😯 😛
There was a hidden video in that last post, btw – did you catch it??:)
I had such a FUN and full low carb day yesterday. I cannot wait to tell you all about it (!) so grab a coffee and let’s catch up…
I’ll tell you WHY I freaked out over my dinner this morning, what I did about it, lessons learned (DUH!), share my fun “low carb night out” with you, plus show you how my MyFitnessPal food diary REALLY came out for the day.
Meeting Kyndra Holley of Peace, Love & Low Carb was definitely a highlight of my day of course. I’ll show you something she gave me, and what I did with it. 😉
Meeting Up With Low Carb Friends
I headed to Nashville last night for Kyndra Holley’s Craveable Keto Tour book signing event, and met up with a fun low carb group for dinner before we all headed over.
We ended up with group of 10 which made for GREAT conversation and getting to meet a lot of new people. And even more after dinner, because there was a HUGE turnout for Kyndra’s book signing event in Nashville!
There was A LOT of beautiful low carb food on that dinner table! 🙂
I ordered the grilled salmon and for my two sides I chose the Grilled Brussel Sprout Skewer and the Mushroom Skewer:
It was absolutely DELICIOUS and I totally cleaned my plate! 🙂
Tip: Always look up restaurant meals BEFORE you go out to eat.
I usually always look up the nutrition facts online before I go out to eat, or at least on my mobile before I order food at restaurants, but I was in a rush yesterday and decided to just wing it.
I also usually log my meals BEFORE I eat them. This gives you an idea where you are as you go through the day, and what you have left.
I finally sat down to log this meal this morning and was SHOCKED at the macros for the Grilled Brussel Sprout Skewer on the Logan’s Roadhouse Nutrition Facts page:
45 carbs ?! 😯
Dang! And to make matters worse, Logan’s Allergen Sheet says the brussel sprout skewer contains soy, wheat & gluten. 😐 What?!
If I had looked that side dish up beforehand I never would have ordered it.
But I did order it, and I ate it, and all I could see and taste was the very basic brussel sprouts, bacon & onion – nicely roasted.
So I was perplexed!
I called the Logan’s restaurant and asked to speak to the manager (who was super nice btw!), and asked her how that side item was cooked and what was added – and shared my confusion over the ingredients & nutrition facts.
She said normally the Grilled Brussel Sprout Skewer has a “moonshine glaze” which would be very wet and sweet, and a dark reddish glaze almost like caramel.
Ahhh – mine did NOT have that glaze. WHEW! Apparently they forgot to add it (yay!) but I’ll know next time to BE SURE to ask them NOT to add it. 😉
It was a delicious meal the way it was served last night, so I’m grateful to discover it didn’t in fact have 45 carbs plus soy wheat & gluten. 😛
I found this Bacon Brussel Sprouts Appetizer Recipe and logged that instead, then added the onion separately.
You can see the difference in that vs the nutrition facts Logan’s had listed online:
That’s as close as I could get to an accurate entry for my side, which is sometimes all you can really do when dining out and logging your macros. 😉
Lessons learned: 1) Eat clean and super low carb before going out to restaurants. I had almost half my carbs for the day in food & coffees before I went to dinner. 😛
and 2) ALWAYS look up the nutrition facts for restaurant menu items and KNOW what you’re ordering. 😉
Two things I know very well by now, lol – but it was a good lesson in getting too comfortable and thinking I could easily wing it!
Here’s how my MyFitnessPal diary came out for the whole day:
Dinner was delicious, the company was GREAT, and the two hour low carb meetup was full of fun and laughs and sharing. ♥ It was an absolutely priceless experience to share that time together in person over great meals!
Topped off like a cherry by Kyndra Holley’s book signing event after, of course. 🙂
It was such a pleasure to FINALLY meet her in person after following her blog since I started my own in the same year (2011). SEVEN years!
She had a GREAT turnout in Nashville for her Craveable Keto Book Tour and Keto Happy Hour event, which made for even more fun hugs & conversations. 🙂
She signed my copies of her newest books of course, and we shared a BIG hug that screamed, “I totally get you!!” I can’t tell you the times I’ve read her words on a screen and felt like she was reading my mind, or how hard it hit me when she poured her heart out about gaining her weight back – and how hard that was for her.
Been there – I cried, for her AND with her, when I read that one…
The stories she shared last night at her book signing event gave me both chills and tears, with smiles and laughs too.
She has a beautiful personality, and such a great way of touching people in such a positive & encouraging way with her experiences.
If you haven’t picked up her newest book Craveable Keto yet, you should. It’s much more than just a cookbook. She poured her soul into this one. 🙂
I live 90 minutes outside of Nashville and strong storms were rolling in with a tornado watch, so I headed out (ahead of the storm! 🙂 ) and enjoyed an iced coffee with sugar free vanilla on the way home as a low carb treat.:)
Kyndra sent me both of her newest books when they were first released, along with a bag of Swerve to use in her recipes – which was SO thoughtful of her! 🙂
It was great timing too, because several people have asked me my opinion on Swerve vs Sweet Like Sugar.
The skinny (you know, the short & sweet) on that (lol) is…
I prefer Sweet Like Sugar by Ketologie. In order to answer the questions though I did use the Swerve in two low carb recipes where I normally use Sweet Like Sugar – to give it a true comparison.
I tested both sweeteners side by side in two recipes:
Low Carb Apple Pie Waffles
Low Carb Cinnamon Coffee Cake
(and straight off my finger, lol)
The Swerve definitely has an aftertaste when you lick it off your finger, or sprinkle it straight onto foods, where Sweet Like Sugar does NOT. However they both worked VERY well in my low carb recipes – without any aftertaste. BUT I use way less sweetener than most people. Other people commented they DO notice an aftertaste and “cooling effect” when baking with Swerve (in larger amounts).
I love so many of the Ketologie products, like the Roast Chicken Bone Broth and Keto Shakes, that I’ll definitely be keeping the Sweet Like Sugar on order from them.
It’s simply the BEST sugar free / low carb sweetener I’ve ever found.;)
Anyway, a big THANK YOU to Kyndra for the books and the Swerve, and for bringing together such an amazing group of local low carb people… that I can now call FRIENDS. 🙂
Speaking of, Kyndra is a HUGE fan of the shakes & broth too – we talked about that a bit last night.:) You can see my experience with Ketologie and a photo tour of how I use their products.
Such a great find!!
Tomorrow is weigh-in day…
At dinner last night we were talking about ketone testing (among a hundred other things! lol), but I’ll save what I want to share with you about that for my next post…
I love sharing my life and meals with you. I hope it encourages you, inspires you, or at least helps you consider new low carb foods to enjoy!
How are things going with you this week?
Leave a comment and let’s chat!:)
