Did you know today is Positive Thinking Day? 🙂 That seems suiting following weigh-in day, and how hard it can be to stay positive when the scales are being stubborn! 😛 We had a great discussion on that though. So today is a good day to stay focused on all we’ve accomplished, and what we’re working toward! 😉
On that note, I had a serious mood-lifter yesterday after yet another disappointing weigh-in. It was a great reminder that there is so much more to this low carb lifestyle than what the scales say!
It all had to do with a skirt. No, not this skirt -lol. But I’ll explain, and show you what I mean…
When I had the opportunity to review this Pleated Vintage Skirt, I thought it would be fun! Appcome sent it to me free in exchange for my thoughts.
I love anything vintage/retro! What appealed to me most about THIS skirt is the colorful, mysterious scenic print. 🙂 It’s also very inexpensive.
Confession: I had to ask for an extension on the review, because I couldn’t zip it all the way up while my weight was fluctuating last week -lol. 😛
It’s “A Skirt With A Story.” I love that.:) What I do NOT love is the way it looks on me, lol. It doesn’t have a very flattering fit, and not just on me but on anyone else I’ve seen it on (looking at other reviews).
I agree with those other reviews that it’s really cute, definitely a conversation piece, that the stitching is a little sketchy, etc. It puffs up on you in all the wrong places, and doesn’t flatter your natural curves…
This is VERY important, at ANY size. You want to wear clothes that make you FEEL good, and flatter your figure – no matter what your figure. I tend to buy things that have a slimming effect either with their cut or with their pattern, and of course I ALWAYS wear Spanx with skirts or dresses. That’s important. Spanx rocks! 😉
I’ll show you a couple of photos of it real quick, then I’ll show you what I changed into next – and what a difference that makes…
This was an accidental photo, lol. I stopped to check out the seams & stitching and the cool scenic print. It gives you an idea how colorful it is though, and the slick poofy material.
Here’s my best pose, and my best attempt at making this skirt look flattering (thank you Spanx! haha) – which works best if you stand very still and the wind doesn’t blow. And of course you have to “suck it in” and do the hip & arm thing…
Next, I changed into a slimming skirt from Fabletics, with the same top and the same Spanx of course. 🙂 This skirt is MUCH more flattering!
Wait – we have to do the TRUE test…
At some point you have to sit down, right?
And that’s when everything changes -lol. That’s always the true test of a dress, skirt or even pants for me. You have to look good sitting!
The poofy vintage skirt is cute of course, but it makes me look wider than I really am. It poofs up in the back too. And being high waisted it’s a bit of a “pinch” when you’re sitting down.
In contrast, this fitted Fabletics skirt fits like a second skin and is not only super comfortable – it even looks good sitting down!
That’s also a Fabletics tank, by the way. It got hot so I changed.:)
But there you have it: same day, same weight, same Spanx underneath (lol).
I felt prettier, slimmer (definitely more comfortable) and more confident in the black & white skirt. Something as simple as that can make you feel totally different!
In all fairness, Fabletics are MADE with a flattering slimming effect.
I do like the vintage skirt. It’s definitely eye-catching and interesting! I’m not in love with it, but I do like it. And I think a better top might make a big difference, maybe. But when I’m getting dressed, I’m more likely to grab something more flattering – that makes me feel slimmer and more confident. 😉
What do you think?
I’ve really been making an effort to freshen up my wardrobe lately. Not just because I’ve lost so much weight this year, but also because I’m bad to wear comfortable clothes that I could easily gain or lose 20 pounds in.
I have this one pair of jeans that are MAGIC like that, lol.
It’s not good for my confidence though, or my motivation. The better I look and feel, the more I seem to focus on my health goals.
And it DOES help to wear clothes that carbs just won’t fit in. 🙂
Speaking of, I’m sitting here in my “fat pants” as I write this: a favorite old pair of cotton plaid lounge pants. I better go change (lol)…
Best,
Lynn Terry,
aka @LowCarbTraveler
p.s. If you don’t have Spanx yet, I recommend the open-bust bodysuit. It’s the BEST, and it’s what I’m wearing in all of the pictures above.
You can see more of my Fabletics outfits here too. That holiday special is over, but I share a good money-saving tip with you that still works!

You look mahvelous
Lynn Terry says
Thank you, Linda! I *felt* fabulous in the fabletics skirt. π Nothing like seeing how you LOOK to make you quit looking at the scales. π I’ve worked so hard to get this far, so it’s silly to get discouraged over a 5 week plateau, lol. Thanks again – you made me smile!! π
Carla Ives says
I agree, Lynn, pencil skirts are much more flattering for most of us I, too, love the colors in your vintage skirt, but I think that style looks best on Taylor Swift body types which I definitely am NOT. I also agree with you on wearing big clothes. As soon as something gets saggy, baggy on me, it goes into the donation bag. Don’t want to take a chance on fitting back into it again. π
I have a pencil skirt like yours in a paisley print that I got from J. Jill and I love it. Will get the next one from Fabletics!
Lynn Terry says
I was thinking the same thing, Carla – tall & stick skinny body types would definitely benefit from that style of skirt! A body type I am NOT either, haha.
I’m still in the process of cleaning out my closet(s) and finding new combinations of things to wear – some old, some new. I found a whole box of clothes I had stashed away because they were too small a year or two ago. Score!!
I bet that paisley pencil skirt is adorable. I have a black one I wore last winter with my boots, and I’m going to have to see if that still fits… I totally forgot about it!
BECKY HUBER says
That skirt would be better if it was shorter and not so poofy/full.when you raised it up in the one picture it looked fantastic!
Lynn Terry says
Hmm – I think you’re right. It *could* be really cute, if it were cut right. I do love the scene on it. That’s what appealed to me most about it. It did make me feel like June Cleaver though. π haha
Gina says
No no no no no…….on the vintage skirt
You.look WAY Slimmer in the fabletics skirt and way more flattering.
That skirt would make twiggy look wide lol
π
Lynn Terry says
There you are, Gina π How in the world are ya?? π And lol, I agree. It’s just cut funny or something. But it was fun!!
Gina says
Hi Lyn.
I am doing fine now
I have been so busy. There are more problems with my house but i am still sticking with my woe. I have had wine a couple of times. It helps relax me. I know it might stall my weight loss but i don’t care lol. I have been so stressed out lately
I actually am down two lbs last week (before the wine) π
I was taken aback the other day by a comment a lady madeto me that i met at the hotel
We were talking about knee surgery and how it made such a difference in her life
I told her i was considering it too when she said to me ” well you are not overweight”
I couldn’t believe it…..so people do not see me as being overweight anymore? It felt so sureal for someone to actually say that to me. I still can’t get over it
I know i still have some weight to lose but it certainly. Blew my mind to have someone say this to me
BODY IMAGE……i still picture myself in my mind as being fat. I need to take some new pics of myself and look at them to allow this to sink in
I can see how great you look now
Forget that D^*<Γ· scale. It doesn't tell the whole story. π
Lynn Terry says
I think a little wine is just plain called for now and then. π That or rum and diet coke, which is also one of my personal favorites!
You’re so right about the scale, and about body image – and how we see ourselves vs how others view us. It’s all about perspective (which is usually skewed, lol).
I’m glad you got an uplifting comment like that! We all need that sometimes, to realize we HAVE made progress, and get out minds off today – or this week – or this month.
That’s been powerful for me too, because this past month to 6 weeks hasn’t shown a lot of progress on the scales.
I think new pictures is a great idea. In that pretty dress you wore recently too! π
Marti says
I’m with Gina on this. No, No on the vintage skirt! The fabletics skirt looks so great I’m thinking of ordering one myself.
Lynn Terry says
I love LOVE love it! I have lots more Fabletics, so I need to take some new pictures. I have one of their tanks that has a shelf bra that actually *works* – it’s a tank I can wear without an undergarment (shocking, I know!). It’s a little saucy π but it’s super cute! Anyway, yes – the skirt feels like skin. It’s very fitted but it doesn’t feel “tight” – which is hard to describe. π
Sandi says
I would hem the retro skirt to a shorter length above the knees would look so much better .
Lynn Terry says
I agree, Sandi! I may consider doing that. I’m not sure how hard it would be with this material, but it’s such an inexpensive skirt anyway. Or maybe I could find something else creative to do with it. π
Gina says
The fabletic skirt is the bomb. That is super flattering and sexy
The vintage skirt would have been something Sandy wore on the movie Grease before she broke into her sexy leather new look
Thats what you remind me of here
…a before and after, Sandy from the movie Grease. Lol. π
It might look good on Taylor Swift…..lol.
Never on me. Haha. π
Gina says
I think i am seriously thinking af getting some items from fabletics
Their clothing is very flattering
I agree with what you said. It is not so much what size you wear but to wear clothing that is flattering to your size. Pencil skirts are always more flattering than a full skirt like you modeled.
Lynn Terry says
I find it is very important to dress flattering. There are so many ways to dress slimmer. Darker colors for the larger areas, depending on your body shape. Black minimizes, so it’s great for skirts or dresses. White definitely amplifies, and also shows every little bump and bulge – so it should only be used to accent or slim, never as a solid color.
I do love Fabletics. I’ve gone down a full size just in the last few months (in their clothes), so I have ordered a few new pieces lately – and they have some CUTE new stuff. Most of which I’m wearing out & about, not just for workouts. The new tanks I got last week are my favorite at the moment. π
If you do check it out, look at the comfy one-piece dresses with a hood. It’s like a hooded sweatshirt dress, but in very comfortable material. I practically lived in that last winter with a pair of leggings under it, lol – SO comfortable! But nice enough to check the mail and answer the door in. π
Gina says
The hooded dress sounds perfect for me. I have worn white jean capris for the first time this summer. I wore a long dark top with it. I did not think the white capris made me look bigger but it was probably cause the zipper on these pants acted like a girdle on my abs. Lol. I love white so that sucks. π
I used to work as a nurse when we had to wear ALL WHITE. I HATED IT. it was NOT flattering at all !!!!! π
Lynn Terry says
I bet the capris were cute! The long top was smart. It really just depends on how you’re built. I could pull off white capris or pants now too, with my dark purple tunic tank for sure.
One of the shows I watched on that said your shirt should come down to cover about half your butt, instead of just at your waist (like I was wearing the red top with the b&w skirt).
I wish I could recall which show that was. It was a few years ago. But it’s amazing what a difference your clothes alone can make!
Penny says
I have searched the Fabletics site for the black and white skirt and have never found any skirts or dresses either π There must be a secret to the site that I haven’t found yet. You look fantastic in that skirt and you are such an inspiration.
Lynn Terry says

I love those skirts on you!
