Eating low carb at The Donut Hole?!
YES, it can be done. ๐ And Iโll even show you how EASY it isโฆ
Let me just start by stating the obvious:
I did NOT choose this location for dinner.
I just returned from my 4th annual Low Carb Beach Trip at Okaloosa Island, near Destin FL on Fort Walton Beach. I have local friends in the area that I always see while Iโm there, and we decided to get out for a โcouples dinnerโ on Saturday night.
Sheryl & Adam are super fun. ๐ Weโve been friends for years, and we get together every chance we get. Hereโs a picture of Sheryl and I earlier that day (at lunch) โ where I might have had a little too much of my low carb rum drink, lol:
(Thatโs me on the left, in the blue tank.)
When we made dinner plans, they wanted to take us somewhere with a little โlocal flavorโ. Apparently The Donut Hole is a HOT spot in Destin! Of course, in usual form, I said โSure โ I love a good challenge!โ
The truth is, Iโve really been struggling with temptations over the last week. I have no idea why. Itโs all in my head I guess, a mental thing, because I donโt actually want it. But itโs definitely getting my attention lately for some weird reason. Anyway, I was a little concerned โ Iโll confess โ but what better way to test your willpower, right? ๐
Once I started looking over the menu, none of the carbs really sounded that good anyway. It was the pie cases and donut racks I had to ignore, lol. So I kept my head down and looked over the menu.
I donโt know if you can see โThe Diet Plateโ on that menu. Itโs a joke โ literally. ๐ I love that they have a sense of humor at least. hahaโฆ
Anyway, I decided on the Ultimate Gulf Coast Omelet. Itโs chock full of blue crab and gulf shrimp. YUM! The sides on the menu were a total loss, so when the server came by I asked him if they happened to have any strawberries or avocado in the kitchen. He was a lot of fun โ super nice waiter! He said they had both. SCORE! So thatโs what I had for my sides:
The shrimp were HUGE, the crab was so tasty, the avocado was SO fresh, and the strawberries were amazingly sweet! WOW. What a seriously amazing low carb meal! ๐ I came REAL close to cleaning that plate, lol. I think I only left a few scraps of eggs!
I did really good, until I was standing at the front counter to pay โ and saw the wall of donuts. I leaned over to Ricky and said, โI just want to lick one.โ
Iโm pretty sure the lady at the register heard me, because she was very obviously holding back laughter. ๐
I think Ricky was impressed with my resolve, because he bought me this awesome Donut Hole coffee mug to take home with me. I collect coffee mugs from fun places Iโve been. Iโm a sentimental junkie, AND a big coffee drinker (lol), so that was a super sweet gift. Heโs awesome!
That mug will remind me of how GREAT it feels to OVERCOME the temptations every time Iโm enjoying my coffee.
So there you go. You can eat low carb practically anywhere. I just proved it. ๐ *cheers*
Best,
Lynn Terry aka Low Carb Traveler
p.s. In the strangest of coincidences, I discovered later that at the EXACT same time I was eating at The Donut Hole with my friendsโฆ there was a โdonut discussion disasterโ happening in my low carb challenge group -lol. Iโm sure my โshareโ of eating at the Donut Hole went over REAL well given that timing. ๐ Oops! hahaโฆ
This is great! I live in Destin and this is exactly what I would have ordered!
Very cool, Chris! I wish I had known โ you could have joined us. ๐ Next time maybe? I am in the area every June! *cheers*
Hi lynn, I recently started the low carb way of lifeโฆ mainly because I am diabetic. I had run across an awesome website, and then I remembered you were doing it as well. Was wondering what fruits are ok, My understanding it is just berries and melon. I want to get my blood sugars down but worry about the fruit, but obviously want to eat the fruit. By the way you look great Lynn. Kelly
Thank you, Kelly! ๐ Great to hear from you!! Personally, I only eat berries, and in moderation. I track everything super close, and youโll want to do the same being diabetic.
A good site to look up produce, or any food without a label is: http://ndb.nal.usda.gov/ndb/search I use it often.
How low carb are you going? I stick to 20 net carbs a day max โ a ketogenic (very low carb) dietโฆ
