Eating low carb at The Donut Hole?!
YES, it can be done. 🙂 And I’ll even show you how EASY it is…
Let me just start by stating the obvious:
I did NOT choose this location for dinner.
I just returned from my 4th annual Low Carb Beach Trip at Okaloosa Island, near Destin FL on Fort Walton Beach. I have local friends in the area that I always see while I’m there, and we decided to get out for a “couples dinner” on Saturday night.
Sheryl & Adam are super fun. 🙂 We’ve been friends for years, and we get together every chance we get. Here’s a picture of Sheryl and I earlier that day (at lunch) – where I might have had a little too much of my low carb rum drink, lol:
(That’s me on the left, in the blue tank.)
When we made dinner plans, they wanted to take us somewhere with a little “local flavor”. Apparently The Donut Hole is a HOT spot in Destin! Of course, in usual form, I said “Sure – I love a good challenge!”
The truth is, I’ve really been struggling with temptations over the last week. I have no idea why. It’s all in my head I guess, a mental thing, because I don’t actually want it. But it’s definitely getting my attention lately for some weird reason. Anyway, I was a little concerned – I’ll confess – but what better way to test your willpower, right? 🙂
Once I started looking over the menu, none of the carbs really sounded that good anyway. It was the pie cases and donut racks I had to ignore, lol. So I kept my head down and looked over the menu.
I don’t know if you can see “The Diet Plate” on that menu. It’s a joke – literally. 🙂 I love that they have a sense of humor at least. haha…
Anyway, I decided on the Ultimate Gulf Coast Omelet. It’s chock full of blue crab and gulf shrimp. YUM! The sides on the menu were a total loss, so when the server came by I asked him if they happened to have any strawberries or avocado in the kitchen. He was a lot of fun – super nice waiter! He said they had both. SCORE! So that’s what I had for my sides:
The shrimp were HUGE, the crab was so tasty, the avocado was SO fresh, and the strawberries were amazingly sweet! WOW. What a seriously amazing low carb meal! 🙂 I came REAL close to cleaning that plate, lol. I think I only left a few scraps of eggs!
I did really good, until I was standing at the front counter to pay – and saw the wall of donuts. I leaned over to Ricky and said, “I just want to lick one.”
I’m pretty sure the lady at the register heard me, because she was very obviously holding back laughter. 🙂
I think Ricky was impressed with my resolve, because he bought me this awesome Donut Hole coffee mug to take home with me. I collect coffee mugs from fun places I’ve been. I’m a sentimental junkie, AND a big coffee drinker (lol), so that was a super sweet gift. He’s awesome!
That mug will remind me of how GREAT it feels to OVERCOME the temptations every time I’m enjoying my coffee.
So there you go. You can eat low carb practically anywhere. I just proved it. 🙂 *cheers*
Best,
Lynn Terry aka Low Carb Traveler
p.s. In the strangest of coincidences, I discovered later that at the EXACT same time I was eating at The Donut Hole with my friends… there was a “donut discussion disaster” happening in my low carb challenge group -lol. I’m sure my “share” of eating at the Donut Hole went over REAL well given that timing. 😛 Oops! haha…
