I mentioned in my last update that I still wasn’t feeling well. I picked up a nasty virus that hit me late Monday night – that’s a week ago Monday, so this has been wearing on for 10+ days now.
I felt better during the day for a few days, but would tank again by evening. And then by Wednesday, it was like it doubled back around and hit me full force all over again. 🙁
I started back eating low carb on Sunday, as soon as I felt well enough, and by Thursday morning I was back down to 150.4 pounds – just half pound away from being below 150 again. The “sick weight” came back off fast!
I felt absolutely awful on Wednesday. I had a sick stomach again, felt weak and drained, and was nauseous the entire day. Nothing appealed to me so I found it difficult to eat, but being hungry made me feel sick too. I had errands to run, but halfway through I had to come home and lay down for an hour – then I finished them and was in bed by 6pm. It was a miserable day, followed by another one yesterday.
Here’s what I ate on Wednesday…
Wednesday’s Low Carb Meals
For breakfast, I had two leftover low carb sausage biscuits.
I got a Low Carb Grilled Chicken Club from Hardee’s for lunch while I was out running errands. It was all I could do to finish it, given how bad I was feeling at that point.
I decided to try to finish my errands and then call it a day. On the way back I stopped at another Hardee’s and got a Low Carb Thickburger. I ordered it play with cheese & mayo, which is “zero carbs” according to the nutrition facts on their website.
I had a hard time eating that as well. I made one more stop on the way home – to grab some Atkins Peanut Butter Granola Bars. Those are plain/bland enough that I thought it would be easier to eat one of those if I got hungry again.
Unfortunately Rite Aid was very limited on their Atkins selection, so I ended up with chocolate peanut butter bars instead.
Here’s my entire MyFitnessPal Food Diary for Wednesday:
The “fake chocolate” on the bar didn’t really set well with me. I think sugar alcohol is the last thing I need with my stomach so off from this bug. Like I said, I came home and crawled in bed and just called it a day. I spent most of the day on Thursday in bed as well – but I felt even worse yesterday, so I mostly ate bread & crackers. Between the nausea and the “runaway tummy” I just couldn’t stomach anything else.
I assume this is just the virus running it’s course. I did wonder if keto flu made it worse again, thinking perhaps I went back to “super low carb” too soon. Or if dropping almost 5 pounds in 4 days was too big a shock on my iffy system.
All I know is everything (low carb) I tried to eat on Wednesday totally turned my stomach. The off plan (bland) foods yesterday were easier.
It’ll pass. Whatever I’m sick with is a pretty big deal, and it’s been more than 10 days of misery. That would wear on anyone. It has certainly worn me down. 😛
I feel a little better so far this morning. Definitely better than the last two mornings started out. I’m planning to just take it easy today and see how I feel. I’m not going to push it, though. I have my next trip in just over a week, and I need to get myself back to 100% before I head out. 😉
I made a quick run to the store last night for a few staples. I got stuff to make more of the low carb peanut butter cookies, and some plain low carb parmesan bread, because those are both bland enough not to upset my stomach.
I don’t know what else to do at this point but to just ride it out, and do whatever it takes to feel better. I haven’t even been able to work the last couple of days. The fact that I was able to sit down and write you this note without getting “motion sickness” from the screen is a plus, so I’m hopeful for a better day today.
Did you know one of those little packs of peanut butter crackers is 15 net carbs?! Ugh. I’m going to grab a hot shower to try to knock off the chill, and if I’m feeling up for it (a BIG if) I’ll make up the cookies and bread out of almond meal to have on hand. Those are healthier options at least.
Just a quick update. Still recovering here. I hope you’re having a great day, and gearing up for a FUN weekend! 🙂 *cheers*

I hope you feel better soon. I applaud your determination to get back on the wagon. I would still be on crackers, broth, and lemon-lime soda.

Thanks for all your help with low carb. I hope you can shake this nasty virus you have.

This is crazy! I don’t know how you’re managing. You’ve got two big dogs to walk each day! Poor girl. I wish you a speedy, full recovery. PS. I sent you a longish email asking some questions. Did you get it? Though I’m sure you’ve been too sick to do much. Email was jezabel1956. Hugs from someone who could almost be your mum.

I am sorry you have been hit so hard. It’s terrible! When I read your earlier posts, I did think of the recent Listeria contamination from the Dole bagged greens facility–many generic brands were included including greens marketed toward restaurants. Since you eat low carb, I wondered if maybe you had had a possible exposure and infection? Something to bring up to the doctor if things don’t get better soon.

I’m so sorry you’re so sick! With such havoc on your system, you might want to consider taking a probiotic to get your gut bacteria back in check. I was sick a few months ago with the flu, which was about 3 days, and I know my digestive system was way out of whack. Also, as another commenter mentioned, did they check you for the listeria? Because that can be brutal! Feel better soon!!

Thank you all so much. I did get a probiotic from my pharmacist yesterday, along with another round of phenergan. Great suggestion! I wish I had thought of it a week ago. 😛 lol. I am just riding this out the best I can…
I’m behind on emails, Isabel – but I’ll catch up with you as soon as I can sit down to a computer long enough without the screen & scrolling making me dizzy. 😉 *cheers*

how did you get myfitness pal to record your net carbs?
Lynn Terry says
Ruth – I use this addon/hack to get Net Carbs in MyFitnessPal: http://www.travelinglowcarb.com/4448/myfitnesspal-hack/ It’s free, and I use a free MFP account. 🙂

Hi Lynn- sorry you’re sick, but maybe bacon and sausage and cheese were too much for a recovering stomach?
Homemade bone broth or storebought chicken broth with boiled hamburg in it, might have been easier on the tum. Still low carb.
Chicken and spinach, very little fats also would have been easier for you to digest.
Culturelle is the most proven probiotic.
Feel better!
