In my last post I told you about the special promotions at Curves Fitness Center.
I printed off the coupon, good for a free week at Curves, and made my appointment. I went yesterday at 4:00 and did my “intake”.
She took my measurements and health info, then showed me how to use the circuit machines. I totally loved it!!
I even decided to stay for the Monday night Zumba class. 😀 I got a serious workout!
I’ll share my “weight stats” with you in an upcoming post. One of the numbers that stuck in my head was that I have “30% body fat”. I have no idea how they determine that exactly, or what my number is supposed to be, but that sounded really high to me. LOL.
I shot a quick video for my personal video blog when I got home from my appointment at Curves.
You can see it here:
Join me and let’s do some moving this week! 😀
Oh, and want to know something super cool?? They have a “travel pass” for Curves Members. I can use a Curves Fitness Center anywhere in the world while I’m traveling! Not just anywhere in the country, but anywhere in the world. How cool is that? 😉

I wish we had Curves here!
Lynn if they didn’t use calipers on you, they probably calculated your body fat % using one of the BMI formulas around. There are calculators online where you can check the figure. Generally 18 – 25% is considered “acceptable” for a woman and anything over 25% is classed as “overweight” or “obese” (sorry!) Try this one: http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/
They’re not terribly accurate though, because I’m obviously (from your photos) much bigger than you are but my BMI is 28.6%. Calipers (in the hands of someone who knows how to use them properly) are far more accurate than any formula. However what’s really important is the change in BMI over time, rather than the absolute figure.

Thank you for that, Isobel. I know that I am overweight for my height – which is why I changed my way of eating and started working out. π LOL I wasn’t overly concerned with the numbers – or even the measurements. I’m actually a lot less concerned with where I am… than I am with where I want to be – which is my big focus. π
So I’m not sweating it (haha). I am going for my vision of tone arms, tone legs, and the best shape of my life!
Isobel says
And you will get there Lynn, for sure π
The thing about BMI is that it tries to compensate for the over-emphasis on “weight” that most programmes focus on, when what’s important is how that weight is made up. The “muscle weighs more than fat” thing. So toning up will automatically reduce your BMI even if you lose no more weight at all.
I’m proud to say that Israel has just passed a law (and is I believe the first country ever to do so) that female models used in advertisements here must have a bodyfat % of at least 18.5% and any air-brushing or photoshopping to make the model look thinner must be stated on the advert as well.
Lynn Terry says
Wow, that’s interesting news – and very cool! π

Lynn – don’t panic! 30% body fat is not obese. At 30% you are in the average range for a woman.
The Body Mass Index is totally different and the two shouldn’t be confused…

I, too, went to Curves at 4 p.m. yesterday; thanks, Lynn, for the “gentle push” toward something I had been considering doing off on and on for several years! In fact, I almost didn’t go yesterday.
Like you, I really, really liked the “work out”. Boo, though, as Zumba here is just two times a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays. I am going tonight to get in on that because I definitely want to try it.
I’m in for the “free week” as well and if I want to join, our Curves is offering a special during March where you can contribute a bag of groceries and join free, and not have to pay the joining fee. Monthly membership is then the same as yours.
While I do have some exercise equipment at home, what I have does not provide for “strength training” (and socialization) – that you get using the machines at (our) Curves. We also have a “coach” who works with you as you go around to each of the 18 different machines.

That’s one of the things I really like about it so far. It’s like having a personal trainer! I went again today and she walked through the entire circuit with me again to make sure I got the best use of them all. I so enjoyed it!
I got a really great workout today. I especially love the arm toning machines, as that’s my focus right now. I can’t wait to go back tomorrow!! π
Why did you almost not go, by the way? Are you going every day this week while it’s free? I missed Tuesday due to a schedule conflict, but got in a half hour home workout at least.
