My Calphalon Coffee Maker decided to go on the fritz yesterday. LOL. I got up and made my usual pot of coffee, which was just fine until I went to pour the last cup. I noticed that the coffee left in the pot was simmering.
Hmm, odd, I thought…
I went on about my day, got my work done, took my nap, and got up to make my second pot of coffee. This time the coffee started boiling right in the pot, immediately, and smoke was streaming out the back of the coffee maker. 😯
Of course I unplugged it. LOL. It was totally possessed. 😛
Fortunately I have a backup coffee maker. I’m really glad I didn’t throw it out when I unboxed my brand new Calphalon coffee maker a couple of weeks ago! So I had my coffee and then posted about my crazy experience on Facebook:
My super cool Facebook friends had some great recommendations for a replacement, and I’m researching all of those today. But then a little while later I received a Tweet from Calphalon:
How cool is that?! 😀
So of course I sent them an email first thing this morning. I’ll keep you posted and let you know how they respond. Interestingly I noticed on the Amazon Reviews that others have had a similar experience with this model…
So what about you? Any funny/scary coffee pot stories?? 🙂

Ha! Who says social media has no power! Congrats to Calphalon for putting a smile back on our favorite gal’s face! We’ll be waiting to hear…”the rest of the story”! LOL

Yes, nearly half of the 19 reviews are not so great….
BTW……on the frosted tumblers you bought……I noticed several reviews about them cracking, breaking despite being heavy on the bottom. One reviewer claims one of them broke in their hand while hand washing and cut their hand wide open. So, be careful. I noticed one reviewer came back with an update at the 30 month mark to change their review to indicate a problem with cracking. Other reviews swear they are fine.
Products are just not made with the quality they used to be back in the day, especially if they are manufactured overseas….

I am LOVING the glass tumblers! Fortunately I don’t hand wash dishes, so no worries – haha. 😀 They all survived the dishwasher and the teenager so far, and they are so perfectly sized & shaped. Really happy with them!

BTW…..it was great for the company to contact you directly. Unfortunately, they need to figure out and correct these defects ASAP before someone’s house burns down…..

My wife tried to get a cup of coffee yesterday and started cursing the coffee maker saying it was cheap because the pause and serve was not working. Then coffee started pouring out of the basket. She was about to start cursing again when she saw the inner basket that holds the coffee and filter in the dish drainer. She had put the coffee and filter in without the inner basket. It was a funny moment, but unfortunately the coffee maker got wet and died.
Certainly not as bad as yours though. I agree that they should figure that flaw out pretty quick. But also great customer service and keen surveillance on the internet, good marketing ploy for a negative situation.
Lynn Terry says
LOL that stinks – so no coffee for the wife then, huh? That’s the worst part. 😛

You were lucky that you were around to see the problem, and didn’t have a major fire.
Kudos to Calphalon for owning up to the problem and promising to fix it.
When you get another one, I have a tip for making really good coffee and increasing the lifespan of your coffeemaker: Use distilled water. The first time (and whenever you notice that the coffee making slows down) use a small pinch of baking soda or salt to activate the water detection switch (distilled water won’t conduct electricity, but a tiny amount of mineral content will fix that). Your coffeemaker will never crud up or need the smelly vinegar trick.
Another tip I learned in the Navy: Add a sprinkling of salt (not very much!) to the top of the grounds. It actually makes the coffee taste slightly sweeter. The mechanism is that the sodium coagulates the bitter oils and makes them stick to the paper in the filter (*always* use a paper filter for best coffee).
While we are on the topic of coffee, have you tried “bulletproof coffee”? While I remain skeptical about a lot of the stuff I read on the Bulletproof Executive, I do like “bulletproof coffee.” Downside is that I occasionally get funny looks when I add butter to my coffee… I did that on my last cruise since they didn’t have any real cream. I lost a pound on that cruise…
Lynn Terry says
I’ll have to try that salt trick and report back 😉

So I posted on Facebook, they replied with a tweet and asked me to email them, I sent them an email, and they called me on the phone and left a voicemail. LOL. I just phoned them back and am happy to report they are sending me the Calphalon Electric 10-Cup Quick Brew Thermal Coffeemaker as a replacement. I’m thrilled! I love the thermal pots!! 😀
They’re also sending me a shipping label so I can send the original back to them for inspection so they can see what’s going on with it.
Lynn Terry says
My new thermal coffee maker shipped today. I can’t wait to get it!! 🙂

Update: I received the new thermal pot coffee maker this week, but haven’t had a chance to unbox it yet. I’ll do a video and show you guys what I got – and why I am thrilled it’s a thermal pot! 😀

my calphalon 12 cup coffee maker filled my kitchen with smoke this morning. very scary to think what could happen if i had not come back into the room for an hour. called calphalon and of course they said they never had any problems before. don’t think i want a replacement. not sure how to proceed with reporting problem ( potential fire hazard).any comments or advice would be appreciated.

We have the opposite problem. My girlfriend once made the gigantic mistake of washing the carafe on our Calphalon 12-cup Quick Brew. The next morning, she pressed the start button and nothing happened. Would not heat at all. We filed an RMA, sent the maker bake and Calphalon quickly sent us a new one. Last night, my girlfriend got tired of having a dirty carafe and washed it. Turned it on this morning and, yet again, nothing. How in the world washing a carafe would keep the heating elements from working is beyond me, but it’s happened twice now.

My 6 month old Calphalon glass carafe just sprang a hole this morning. The coffee maker was making popping noises, but I didn’t think about it, walked away for a few minutes and when I returned, I found coffee all over the counter that had leaked from the pot. I am trying to figure out whether one of us may have caused the crack and hole or whether this may be another defect in this product. Has anyone else experienced a similar problem? Does anyone know how to determine if the glass is defective and that is why it sprang a hole?
Lynn Terry says
Did you wash the carafe in the dishwasher by any chance??
